So, what was your salary?

This August, Massachusetts signed the nations first law that prevents employers from "inquiring" as to an applicants previous salary history. Georgia, are you listening?? While this law will not take affect until 2018, it is hoped that this law will be a partner in supporting existing equal pay laws. A little more on this new law:
Applicants will not have to disclose past or current salary/wages (although this information can be volunteers at their discretion).
Employers can not prohibit employees from informing others of how much they are compensated.
Employers are required to offer a compensation figure up front and can no longer rely on what the applicant made in their previous position.
In an ever changing economy and consistently evolving (the PC reference for "always changing") workplace the topic of "salary" becomes increasingly complex. As a human resources professional and an employee I see the black, white, and the gray filling.
The open discussion of salary among employees is a bit concerning (really, where does that ever end well??). However, recruiters (speaking from experience) may see this inability to inquire as reason to grab a second bottle of Excedrin. What do you think?
