This month makes it official. The Ohio based transplant National Cash Registry (NYSE: NCR), will no longer call Gwinnett home and has instead decided to move to a shinny new (not yet in existence) Midtown facility. One thing about living in the State of Atlanta (different from the State of Georgia) is that you get so accustomed to construction that you can forget to wonder & research what that new structure will be (I'll call it "get home tunnel vision").
Over 3,000 jobs will shift from Gwinnett to Midtown (Yay!! Traffic!!!), but in more exciting new this move could result in more jobs in the near future.
Sidebar: I must say I do follow NCR more closely since I recruited for them via 3rd party contract (staffing). It was truly interesting touring facilities where they assemble - cash registers, ATM machines, movie kiosks, and debit/credit devices. I'll never look at them the same way again and I find myself always looking to find their logo on devices whenever I check out. Often I would smile and wonder if anyone I recruited was the employee that assembled a particular machine. More amazing was to getting a brief sneak peak at the machines of our future - many times already in use overseas.
Why did NCR move? Apparently they wanted to get cozy with Georgia Tech talent. Unfortunately, details regarding the nature of these new jobs hasn't been provided. The increase will also result in consolidation of other facilities outside the state to this new Midtown facility. I'm a fan of growth when jobs will be created - the best talent is working talent. Although I do still l wonder how this will impact my commute.
