National statistics tell us that an overwhelming amount of America’s youth have poor standardized test scores and plummeting high school graduation rates. Many of these concerns speak to our educational system woes but also have organizations like America’s Promise concerned about our future and its potential for an under-equipped and unprepared workforce.

In an America’s Promise report, nobel laureate Dr. James Heckman and researcher Dr. Favia Cunhan discuss the significance of soft skills. They site these skills to be equal in significance to academic indicators with regards to successful entry and performance of youth assimilating into today’s workplace.

What are soft skills??

Soft skills are sets of personal attributes and behavioral competencies often associated with an individual’s Emotional Intelligence Quotient (EQ). They should function to promote constructive performance and interactions; enhancing ones career outlook. Most importantly, Soft Skills should complement and be complemented by Hard skills (specific skill set, task performance, occupational requirements, and credentials).

The Mayors Youth Program

Atlanta’s Mayors Youth Program looks to be one step ahead, locally addressing this concern by nurturing future professionals. This program is a great opportunity for students to not only receive support in obtaining the necessary hard skills for tomorrow but also creating a base upon which their soft skills can flourish.

A proud sponsor and partner of The Mayors Youth Program is The Atlanta Society of Human Resources Management. This month, their network of professional volunteers will host workshops on ethics, interviewing, communication, time management, and interviewing. What better way to foster soft and hard skills necessary for youth to successfully navigate and survive their awaiting workforce.
